Crappy so-called music at The Barn

I was out briefly Saturday night to The Barn (418 Church Street south of Carlton, Toronto) for a drink and to see what was up. I live close by, and that combined with a nice warm summery evening made it an easy trip to what I was hoping was going to be a nice end to the evening, with a bit of dancing to some good music that I remembered the 'old' Barn to have. Well, I was sadly disappointed.

It seems The Barn in its new incarnation has succumbed to the combination of way-too-heavy-base-beat-and-absolutely-no-recognisable-tune noise that characterises far too many spots these days. It's really sad, too, because there's actually some great music being made these days that would be stellar for a place like The Barn. But, for whatever reason, the owners and managers seem to think that the crud that was pounding from the speakers Saturday night is somehow better. Judging from the far-less-than-capacity crowd (and I use the work "crowd" generously here) present Saturday night, I can only assume that the current ownership/management is rather out-of-touch with what makes a night spot 'happening'. The Barn certainly wasn't.
